How did we get our name?

Pomegranates are beautiful, mysterious, messy, multi-layered, chambered, and filled with gifts. ......just like women! Pomegranates are also rich with symbolic meaning. Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, is said to have planted pomegranates on the Island of Cyprus. In Greek culture the pomegranate equals abundance and fertility and is given as a housewarming gift. In Judaism the pomegranate is a symbol for righteousness and there are said to be the same number of seeds in a pomegranate as there are laws in the Torah (613). Artists of the middle-ages like Botticelli and Da Vinci included pomegranates in their depictions of the Madonna and Christ child as a symbol of the suffering and hope of Christ. Grenadine, Granada, and hand grenades are all derivations of the pomegranate. Cultures around the world celebrate this marvelous fruit. We think it is a fitting name for an organization of women that is diverse, vibrant and intent on making our world a better place.
